We define Emerging artists as those who have
- an established collectorship and consistent sales;
- been selected and shown in galleries and juried shows;
- been published, or are pursuing similar opportunities
This level is in contrast with an Amateur/Aspiring Artist, who has not yet attained the benchmarks above, and before being considered an Mid-career and then Established Artist, who is routinely presented in established museums and galleries. At the highest level is a Blue Chip artist, whose works are traded through prestigious auction houses and galleries like Sotheby's, and whose work is often of cultural significance.
According to the Tate, "In art, automatism refers to creating art without conscious thought, accessing material from the unconscious mind as part of the creative process. Automatism as a term is borrowed from physiology, where it describes bodily movements that are not consciously controlled like breathing or sleepwalking." Kristin Drake uses this method to create compositions in ink and paint on paper.
"A chemigram (from "chemistry" and gramma, Greek for "things written") is an experimental piece of art where an image is made by painting with chemicals on light sensitive paper," according to Wikipedia. Lena Rudnick's chemigrams are created by experimenting with compositions of household items on photo paper, developing the image, and then digitally enhancing the coloration in post-production.
"Encaustic painting, also known as hot wax painting, is a form of painting that involves a heated wax medium to which colored pigments have been added. The molten mix is applied to a surface—usually prepared wood, though canvas and other materials are sometimes used. The simplest encaustic medium could be made by adding pigments to wax, though recipes most commonly consist of beeswax and damar resin." (Wikipedia). Kelsey Wong's encaustic paintings have 20-30 layers of this wax applied layer by layer, molded and sculpted with a blow torch and blended with color pigments along the way.
Limited Edition prints will be printed the amount of times declared (eg, 5 or 10) plus the allotted A/P amount, and then the digital files will be destroyed; the image will not be printed anymore. Limited Edition prints are indicated on their Certificate of Authenticity.
A/P stands for "Artist's Proof," which are prints that are not considered part of the Edition, and are created and used at the Artist's discretion. These may be experimental prints, or for personal use.
"A technique of neo-impressionist painting using tiny dots of various pure colors, which become blended in the viewer's eye. It was developed by Georges Seurat with the aim of producing a greater degree of luminosity and brilliance of color." Generally speaking, a pointillist painting will form a more concrete image as the viewer looks at the work from a distance. We consider Sarah C.B. Guthrie's painting style adjacent to pointillism in its execution, although her final images remain abstract.
